Description

Mastodon is a free, open-source social network server based on ActivityPub where users can follow friends and discover new ones. On Mastodon, users can publish anything they want: links, pictures, text, video. All Mastodon servers are interoperable as a federated network (users on one server can seamlessly communicate with users from another one, including non-Mastodon software that implements ActivityPub)

Please DO NOT use any other server, production server for your tests as this may cause operational issues!

In scope

Welcome to the Mastodon Bug Bounty program!

We take security seriously and are excited to run this program.

We are specifically interested in finding vulnerabilties in the Mastodon source code available on our GitHub, such as:

  • Leaking of personal data
  • Horizontal / vertical privilege escalation
  • SQLi
  • Denial of service (application level, not volume based)

To simplify testing and research, we provide the staging.mastodon.social domain as a live example of latest Mastodon code, but Mastodon can easily be installed and run on localhost for experimentation.

Source code:
https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon

Documentation:
https://docs.joinmastodon.org

Funding note:
This is a program funded by the European Commission.

Bonus policy:
The European Commission offers a 20% bonus on top of a vulnerability payout if the reporter provides a fully working fix that is merged into the software. Any proposed fix must be exclusively provided via the bug bounty platform in a confidential manner.

Out of scope

In general, the goal of the bounty program is to identify vulnerabilities in the Mastodon source code on our GitHub, because that is the code that is deployed by thousands of independent parties to run their Mastodon servers. We are not interested in finding configuration issues that are unique to the staging.mastodon.social server.

ONLY the provided test server can be used for testing, please do not attack any other Mastodon server!

Out of scope domains

  • Any domain that is not listed in the Domains section, is out of scope for this program

Application

  • Pre-auth account takeover / oauth squatting
  • Self-XSS that cannot be used to exploit other users
  • Verbose messages/files/directory listings without disclosing any sensitive information
  • CORS misconfiguration on non-sensitive endpoints
  • Missing cookie flags
  • Missing security headers
  • Cross-site Request Forgery with no or low impact
  • Presence of autocomplete attribute on web forms
  • Reverse tabnabbing
  • Bypassing rate-limits or the non-existence of rate-limits.
  • Best practices violations (password complexity, expiration, re-use, etc.)
  • Clickjacking on pages with no sensitive actions
  • CSV Injection
  • Blind SSRF without proven business impact (DNS pingback only is not sufficient)
  • Disclosed and/or misconfigured Google API key (including maps)
  • Host header injection without proven business impact
  • Sessions not being invalidated (logout, enabling 2FA, ..)
  • Hyperlink injection/takeovers
  • Mixed content type issues
  • Cross-domain referer leakage
  • Anything related to email spoofing, SPF, DMARC or DKIM
  • Content injection
  • Username / email enumeration
  • E-mail bombing
  • HTTP Request smuggling without any proven impact
  • Homograph attacks
  • XMLRPC enabled
  • Banner grabbing / Version disclosure
  • Open ports without an accompanying proof-of-concept demonstrating vulnerability
  • Weak SSL configurations and SSL/TLS scan reports
  • Disclosing API keys without proven impact
  • Same-site scripting
  • Subdomain takeover without taken over the subdomain
  • Arbitrary file upload without proof of the existence of the uploaded file

General

  • In case that a reported vulnerability was already known to the company from their own tests, it will be flagged as a duplicate
  • Theoretical security issues with no realistic exploit scenario(s) or attack surfaces, or issues that would require complex end user interactions to be exploited, may be excluded or be lowered in severity
  • Spam, social engineering and physical intrusion
  • DoS/DDoS attacks (volume / congestion based) or brute force attacks
  • Vulnerabilities that are limited to non-current browsers (older than 3 versions) will not be accepted
  • Attacks requiring physical access to a victim’s computer/device, man in the middle or compromised user accounts
  • Reports that state that software is out of date/vulnerable without a proof-of-concept
Severity assessment

This program follows Intigriti's contextual CVSS standard

Cool-down period for zero-days
Recently discovered zero-day vulnerabilities found in in-scope assets within 14 days after the public release of a patch or mitigation may be reported, but are usually not eligible for a bounty.
